The work event where you know nobody
What to wear to a work event full of strangers, hair that stays put, and the one person to walk up to first.

Walk up to the person standing alone, say your name, and ask what brought them here. That is the whole plan.
A room of strangers is only people who have not met you yet. One good question at a time is enough.
All the moment cards are at /moments.
The moment
An evening work event, a room of strangers and a name tag.
- What it is
- A mixer, a conference evening or a launch where everyone seems to know someone.
- What you control
- When you arrive, where you stand, and who you walk up to first.
The look
Sharp, easy to move in, and comfortable for two hours on your feet.
- Modern option
- A tailored blazer in emerald or black over a plain top, with straight trousers and closed shoes. One strong colour, nothing fussy.
- Modest option
- A long kurta in one solid colour with straight pants and a structured jacket, dupatta pinned at one shoulder.
- Hair
- Loose waves pushed back, or a low bun. Whichever stays put without you touching it.
- One detail
- Small hoops or a watch. Keep your right hand free for handshakes.
The confidence move
Choose who you speak to, instead of waiting to be chosen.
- Find someone standing alone
- Look near the wall or the food table. Someone alone has the same room to get through as you do.
- Walk over at your own pace
- Smile, give your name, and offer your hand. Slow is fine.
What to say first
Two lines are enough to start any conversation.
- The opener
- Easy to answer and it starts the story.
- The follow-up
- Listen for one detail and ask about it.
Hi, I'm Meera. What brought you to this one?
And what are you working on these days?
If it goes sideways
A stalled chat, an empty corner, or a name you forgot.
- A stalled chat
- A warm exit is a good ending.
- Nobody to talk to
- Stand by the food table and say hello to whoever walks up next.
- You forgot a name
- Said with a smile, it is kind and honest.
I'm going to say hello to a few more people. It was lovely meeting you.
Remind me your name once more. I want to get it right.
Try it today
Before the event.
- Say your intro
- Say your name and one line about your work out loud three times tonight.
- The dare
- Speak to one stranger before you pick up a drink. I dare you to do it in the opening ten minutes.
