The first day of college
Your first day at a new college: jeans with a kurti or a shirt dress, a ponytail or braid, and one hello to the person beside you in the second row.

Sit in the second row and say hi to the person next to you. That's the whole plan.
You are standing at a new gate, with a new timetable in your bag and no face you know. The corridor is loud. Your first lecture is in a room you have not found yet. This is the day, and it is only one day.
The look
Pick clothes you have already worn and felt like yourself in. The day has a lot of sitting, walking between buildings and carrying a bag, so choose what lets you move.
The modest option: a plain kurti in a colour you like, with straight palazzos or jeans you can sit in for hours.
The modern option: a comfortable shirt dress in cotton, with clean white sneakers or your most worn sandals.
For your hair, a ponytail or a single braid. Tie it once, in the morning, and leave it alone for the day.
One small detail is enough: a bright dupatta, a pair of small earrings or a watch you like.
The one confidence move
Arrive ten minutes early. Walk in without hurry and choose a seat near the front, in the second row, not the corner. Put your bag on the floor, keep your shoulders loose and your phone in your pocket. Look up when someone walks in. A seat near the front is a calm place to start, and nobody asks you to explain it.
What to say first
Turn a little to the person beside you and say:
Hi, I'm Meera. Which school were you at?
Use your own name. Then listen to the answer and ask one more thing about it.
If it goes sideways
Say the person beside you just nods and looks away. That is fine. They may be busy with their own nerves, and the person next to you may be as new as you are. Smile once, look at the board, and try again with someone else after the lecture, on the way out. One quiet hello does not use up your day.
One thing to try today
Before your last lecture ends, exchange numbers with one person. Say, "Can I take your number so we can share notes?" Save the name properly in your phone, so you can write to them tonight.
If you want a look and a line ready for your next moment, we send them each week: /moments. Each Sunday: one moment coming up this week, the look for it and the one line to say first.
