Your first Karva Chauth, with his whole family on the terrace
For your first Karva Chauth on the terrace: a red or maroon saree or suit you already own, a low bun or neat braid, and the move of asking his mother to show you the thali.

It is evening, and the terrace is full. His mother, his aunts, his cousins, everyone in red and gold, the thalis being set out. This is your first Karva Chauth in this house, and you are not sure where to stand.
Stand beside his mother. That is the whole plan, and the rest of this note is how to do it well.
The look
Start with the red or maroon you already own. Two ways to wear it.
The modest way: a red or maroon saree, or a salwar suit, with the pallu pinned flat at the shoulder so you can bend and carry things without fixing it. If you have your wedding dupatta, it is allowed to be the star.
The modern way: your wedding dupatta, or any heavy one, over a plain kurta set in cream or black. One colour does the work, so the rest can stay quiet. Flat sandals or juttis, since the terrace floor is hard and you are standing for a while.
For your hair, a low bun with a gajra pinned along it, or a neat braid with the gajra at the end. Either one stays put when you bend over a thali.
One small detail: your bangles. Wear the ones you are most used to, so they do not catch on the dupatta when you reach.
The one confidence move
Walk up and stand beside his mother, a little to her side, not in front. Keep your hands loose, one holding the other at your waist. Let your eyes go to the thali, then to her, and wait one breath before you speak. Standing close to the person who knows the house says you are here to join in, not to watch.
What to say first
Say it softly and look at her, not at the thali:
Mummy, will you show me how you keep the thali here?
If she says it is simple, say you would still like to see it once. Then do what she shows you, in her order.
If it goes sideways
Someone may compare how your family sets it with how this one does. You do not need to defend anything or explain. Smile and say:
I'm learning your way this year.
Then go back to what your hands were doing. It is a full sentence, and it closes the topic kindly.
One thing to try today
Tonight, lay out the whole outfit: the saree or suit, the dupatta, the pins, the bangles and the shoes, all in one place. Keep the gajra somewhere easy to find. Then stand at the mirror and say your first line out loud three times, slowly. On the day, all that is left is to walk up and say it.
