The reception stage photo, when the queue reaches you

For the stage photo at a wedding reception: a saree or Indo-western set in one strong colour, a low bun or side braid, and the move of walking up unhurried, greeting the bride and turning easily to the camera.

The reception queue moves slowly towards the stage. The music is loud, the photographer is calling the next group, and you are holding your clutch and wondering what to say when it is your turn.

The look

Pick a saree in one strong, solid colour, like emerald, wine or deep blue, with a plain blouse. Pin the pallu at the shoulder so it stays in place on the steps. If a saree on stairs worries you, wear an Indo-western set instead: a long kurta with straight trousers, or a jacket over a plain kurta, all in one colour. Either way, check at home that you can lift your foot onto a step without gathering your clothes in your fist.

For your hair, a low bun or a side braid over one shoulder is enough. Both stay neat when you turn your head. For the one small detail, carry a small clutch that closes properly and keep it in your left hand, so your right hand is free to hold the bride's hand.

If you want a more modest version, keep the blouse sleeves to the elbow and the dupatta or pallu pinned. If you want a more modern one, choose the jacket set with a sleek bun. Both are fine. Wear what you can climb steps in and feel like yourself in.

The one confidence move

Walk up at your normal pace. Do not hurry the steps, and do not look down at your feet. At the top, turn first to the bride, take her hand, then turn to the camera and let your shoulders drop. Hold the smile for the count of three, then step down on the side you came from.

On a crowded stage, go to the end of the row. The end has more room, and you can step out of the frame easily when the photographer is done.

What to say first

Say it to the bride, looking at her, before you turn to the camera:

Congratulations, I'm so happy for you both.

If it goes sideways

The likeliest wobble is a blank, where your line leaves your head halfway up the steps. Do not search for it. Say just "Congratulations", smile, and give her hand a squeeze. One word said warmly is a complete greeting. If the photographer tells you to move, move calmly, and keep your smile for the camera.

One thing to try today

Decide your one line before you reach the queue. Tonight, stand at the mirror, pause for one second, and say "Congratulations, I'm so happy for you both" out loud three times. At the reception, say it once more in your head while you wait in line.
